I took this shot on my Virgin America flight to San Francisco last week for my 2-day Artist Workshop….

Btw, Virgin, you were an asshole to me TWICE on my way back home – You didn’t let me get on my flight back & you forced me to wait 4 hours at the airport to get on another flight- which was actually fine because I made some new friends, incidentally I also made some new friends on my flight there too, so whatever… then I went to pick up the book I had left on my plane ride into SFO just 3 days previous, and you had already sent it out to headquarters…. totally annoying… but I still kinda like you, and your beautiful planes, and the fact that you don’t care about showing HBO & nudity on your in-flight entertainment. And I also really enjoyed your Virgin-produced Boing Boing channel… super cool!

35mm groovy film (straight out of the camera)…

I started shooting this little art film of mine over 5 years ago, and spent that much time editing it on & off. It’s finally done. I am overwhelmed with the feeling of completion on such a personal project, and am already thinking about the next one. As you may know- I am married to Stuart Sclater, the bass player of ASTRA. I am also the band’s photographer (here & some recent press in Classic Rock Prog Mag here) and sometimes get to go on tour with them (here, here & here)… To say I’m mega-fan would be an understatement… They were kind enough to give me permission to use the song Silent Sleep off of their first album The Weirding to soundtrack my film, and they also star in it (along with Richard’s beautiful wife, Kelley). ASTRA‘s new album The Black Chord celebrates it’s official release in the US today (it’s unbelievably beautiful- you can buy it here)… so I figured it would be good timing to release this too.

Anyways, my first film:
The Alchemical Poisoning Of Magus Sherwood.

As you may already know, my dear UK friends, the beautiful & talented husband and wife team over at Emma Case Photography suffered a huge robbery a few days ago- cleaning them out of their computers, car and all photography gear. They have spent the past few days working with their insurance companies to attempt to re-build everything they have lost, but will barely be able to recover some of the costs required to get their business back on track. Emma & Pete are some of my favorite people on earth, they have the most giant hearts and sweet souls and have truly worked their asses off building their dreams and creating their beautiful work.

Emma and I became across-the-pond besties a couple of years ago when she started her wedding photography business and since then I have shot their engagement session AND she was a special guest lecturer at my London workshop last September. When I say these people are golden, I really mean it… (Clearly, I love them: The video that Son of Shark Pig shot of us at our London workshop last year can be seen HERE.)

If you can donate a dollar or a pound or anything more, it will really help them get back on track and put the pieces back together. You can read all about the robbery on Emma’s blog HERE… and you can help by going HERE, or by clicking the image below. OR, please help by simply spreading the word via social media!

** A HUGE thank you to the very sweet people over at The Weaver House for offering to set this up and so quickly putting this donation site together! You are so kind and your efforts will come back at you a thousand fold for being the thoughtful and wonderful people that you are!!!! xo

With a simple click on the image below, I just donated safely and all the funds go straight to Emma’s Paypal account. (ps: Emma & Pete, sorry for going behind your backs with all this- but not really… we LOVE you).

I’m a huge fan of the Tomboy Style blog, so I was super excited (to say the least) when Lizzie contacted me a while ago asking permission to use my images in a feature she did on Nicki Bluhm… She later asked to publish one of these images of Nicki for the TOMBOY STYLE BOOK, a study on this iconic style and fashion over the ages… this is already one of my favorite books, and having my work in it just makes me dizzy…

A little more about Tomboy Style: “A visual history that chronicles the past eighty years of women who blur the line between masculinity and femininity, Tomboy explores the evolution of the style and its icons. Vivid commentary illuminates the tomboy’s history and captures a diversity of women who are bound together by their inherent ability to seamlessly blend a rugged sensibility with classic, understated elegance…” Comes out on April 3rd, pre-order it it HERE.

Also, Nicki and her husband Tim will be giving us a private live performance at my upcoming Bay Area Workshop this April!

If you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out yet, I am extremely thrilled to share my new portfolio site, featherlove.com… it took forever but it’s finally up and running. I wanted to move forward from the flash design, the music, the giant logo etc and just have a good space to feature my work. My idea was to build sort of a tapestry of my images that work all together looking at them as one piece (you can zoom out on your browser to populate more images per row), and also be able to view them individually in a clean and simple environment. Designed by my dear client/friend, the brilliantly talented Jenny Ryf Doucedame (remember their wedding & their couple session?) and programmed by Nick Iverson- an absolute pleasure to work with! Also, during the entire design process, Jenny and I managed to converse entirely via email using strictly Summer Heights High lingo… SO professional… Jenny also happens to have a rad new t-shirt line out right now: TUCO. You may also notice my blog design has been slightly updated, as well as my info & faq’s pages.

In our 17 years together he went everywhere with me, every move to every city and every house. When I first brought him home he was 4 weeks old and could fit his entire little body into the palm of my hand. Since I was 18 years old, he loved me, followed me all around… for half of my life he has been my heart. He is the greatest and most beautiful creature I have ever known. My Grand Teacher, the only other love of my life.

Russia, The King, has died. In my arms, at home. We buried his sweet little body outside near his favorite bush, wrapped him in a beautiful scarf, with flowers and his toy. Back to Nature. We played this song at his funeral. My heart and soul are broken. I can feel his love- so big, eternal, incredible, unconditional- still lives. I can feel him kissing my face in the morning, kissing my tears, not wanting me to cry for him. Although all I do is cry for him. I miss his sweet little mouth, his gorgeous body, his smell, his purrs… and his absolutely overwhelming beauty, inside and out.

This has certainly been the biggest loss and pain I have known. He loved me when nobody else seemed to. He loved me even at times when I didn’t love myself. He kissed me when I was in pain. He talked to me, sang to me, thanked me, took care of me. He made me laugh, filled my heart with splendid joy, warmed my bones and my spirit. I can still feel him taking care of me.

Russia- my best friend, my baby boy, my teacher, my king:
You Raised Your Flag Up Into My Heart.

Thank you for loving me so much. I have never known a greater beauty.
Forever Love,
You are forever ineffable. (Thank you to Jane Blevin & Doodle for helping me through this time. You know. You know. And thank you to Zac & Tomas, who dug his grave, stood with us, and helped usher his perfect soul onward. And biggest thanks of all to his daddy Stuart, who saw him for who he was, loved him as much as I did, and who has taken care of me and Russia for so long. Stuart, he loved you as deep and wide as the universe.)

The Italian & French/Italian Riviera leg of my one-month trip, to see all the previous posts from the rest of the trip and read all the craziness- you can view Parts 1-4 here:

world tour part 1: brooklyn, ny & morning passages
world tour part 2: caught in the floods / hurricane irene
world tour part 3: summary of travels
world tour Part 4: Brooklyn (35mm film)
And images from my London Workshop here.

I guess I initially named these posts “world tour” because I was supposed to go “around the world” to Fiji as well but couldn’t make it because of Hurricane Irene (read link above)– so it’s not really a “world tour” per se, but who cares.
This is my set from Turin Italy, and the Italian and French Rivieras.
All shot on 35mm film…

The insanity that was my trip so far (read links above) rendered me completely exhausted. I hadn’t slept much at all the last few days in NY, or on my flight from NY to London- arrived in London early in the morning, my luggage was lost (got it back later that night), got about 3 hours of sleep that night and woke up to workshop day- 25 people and a full day of me talking that I had to be conscious for. After the workshop we all went out for dinner. I knew we had to catch a taxi to the airport to go to Italy at 4am, so we decided to just stay up and party instead of sleeping just a couple of hours. A bunch of the workshoppers agreed to party with us. I had never in my life been so exhausted, jet-lagged and out of it, yet I still managed to dance & drink with everyone, narcolepsy aside. Pappin (Son Of Shark Pig), who I had invited to come with me to London to film the workshop & to hang out in Italy, threw me in a cab at 4am, handled all the crazy airport/luggage issues, and everyone helped out with packing my stuff and getting me on my way (bless their hearts!) We took a 2-hr flight to Italy, another night of no sleep, and arrived there at 7am. We were meeting with Patrick, one of my besties from when I was a kid. I hadn’t seen him since I was 15, that was almost 20 years ago. The last time I saw him we had a seriously terribly bad acid trip together- Shortly after that, he moved back to Italy, I moved to the states. Now he invited us to come hang out in Torino (Turin). Seeing him for the first time in 20 years & meeting his wife Lidia and baby Mila was beyond amazing! They picked us up from the airport and he asked: what do you guys want to do? I responded: I haven’t seen you in 20 years, I haven’t slept in weeks, let’s keep going, fuck it, we’re in Italy– so we kept going another day… walking around Turin, eating, drinking and catching up. I finally got sleep that night… Patrick’s brother Valerio was out of town and offered up his home for us to stay in for those 2 weeks… Thank you so much V! And our hosts gave us the BEST TOUR OF ITALY EVER. I highly recommend Patrick as your tour guide, if you want to experience the REAL underground Italy,

As Patrick likes to summarize: “We drank Barolo and Barbera in Piemonte (where it comes from); Ate Pesto in Liguria (the region that invented it), and if that wasn’t enough, drank PASTIS in the South of France where Serge Gainsbourg fucked Jane Birkin.”

As a birthday gift, I got Stuart a ticket to come meet us out there a week later…

(It really is difficult to describe what an incredible experience this was, but for a full stream-of-consciousness description of this entire trip, go here: world tour part 3: summary of travels)

Waking up, opening huge French windows, and watching a Pasticceria come to life, every morning. (This is the only shot in this series that is digital).

Stuart and Pappin… 4am and we were looking for a Torinian strip club… we found one… and that story is a long one.
Situated a few feet away from the Obelisk of the most negative energy point on earth, this intense & beautiful sculpture below is supposedly built “directly over hell” where the devil himself lives… Turin is a cheery place… In fact there is so much occult history here, they have a nighttime occult “magic” tour in this city.

At the end of our trip we went down to the Italian and French Rivieras where Patrick & his family own some properties. My dream, ever since I was a kid and watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels a million times, was to visit that part of the world…. dream come true. I shot these Riviera photos on a roll of expired 35mm film- which came out so beautifully- I love how washed-out, grainy, nostalgic and dreamy this film looks- just like how my brain always imagined this place…. Menton.

Stuart took this one of me- proud to finally be here.

We drove from Turin to the Rivieras on a road that took us along the coast when we got there, and drove back through the French Alps! A million tiny little old towns tucked away in beautiful mountains.

I got all my film back from my one-month trip, to see the previous posts and read all the craziness- you can view Parts 1-3 here:

world tour part 1: brooklyn, ny & morning passages
world tour part 2: caught in the floods / hurricane irene
world tour part 3: summary of travels

I guess I initially named these posts “world tour” because I was supposed to go “around the world” to Fiji as well but couldn’t make it because of Hurricane Irene (read link above)– so it’s not really a “world tour” per se, but who cares.
This is my set from NY. (Italy will be posted next).
All shot on 35mm film…

During my meeting with Jessie (Morning Passages/ Lomography), Shoko Wanger recognized me on the streets of Williamsburg and came to say Hi!
You can read about my meeting with Jessie HERE, and Shoko is the extremely talented (and stunning!) writer that interviewed me for my feature in Rue magazine, you can read that here (pgs 143-167)- I am so lucky to have met them both in person.

You may recognize Nicki from this photo session I did of her for her last album with The Gramblers. And of course, her husband Tim from The Mother Hips.

Tim and Nicki asked me to photograph them for their new duets album. We shot the session a few days ago, and since they were singing the entire time, I decided to shoot some inpromput video of this private show I was getting at my house.

This is certainly my favorite song on earth right now! You can purchase the Tim & Nicki Bluhm Duets album HERE.
