Feather Love Photography: Artist Workshop (1 day intensive)

There are many incredible technical photography workshops out there (in fact I can recommend some!) but THIS one will be focused more on inspiration, finding your own style & voice in the wedding industry, and being fulfilled as an artist. It’s going to be different and unique to any other photography workshop out there. I have compiled many questions I have been receiving from photographers and put together a talk to cover all those questions. This will NOT be some class on how to make your work look like Feather Love; Instead, it WILL be an inspiring talk and shoot that will help give direction on how to find your OWN unique style and voice, and also on how to do so unapologetically! : ) I strongly believe that each artist has their own path and that sometimes they need to be introduced to their own potential. If you lose your entire grip on reality when you see an incredible f’ing photo, and you want your OWN work to give you that same feeling- this workshop is for you! I went to an excellent workshop in the past and it fully propelled me into my art & my business, and I would love to pay that forward…

When: Saturday, September 4^th 2010
Time: 12 noon- 8pm
Where: My place, Spring Valley, California. San Diego County. (Address & directions available after registration)
Cost: $800 per person
When to book: This is going to be an intimate, laid-back workshop. Space is very limited so that I can pay attention to each guest and have enough time to answer all your questions. We are going to fill up quick!
Food: We’ll be providing lunch & dinner. (Please specify if there are any dietary restrictions so that we can try to accommodate everyone. Send me an email after registration with your dietary specifications at: info@featherlove.com)
Wear: Comfortable clothes and shoes, we will be indoors & outdoors
Bring: Something to take notes on: notepad, ipad, whatevs.. . and IF you feel like it, a camera to shoot the workshop, but that’s not a necessity

FAQ’s:

Can we bring cameras? Yes you can bring whatever camera you like, and take photos during the workshop. But I will be the only one shooting the couple session, if we try to shoot the session as a group we’ll be stepping on each others toes & compromising our shots ; ) After the workshop, I will post one photo on my blog from each guest with a link to your site if you choose to take any pictures during the workshop. (YOU pick the photo you want to submit).

Do you have a cat? I’m allergic. Yes I do have a cat.

Do I need to be a pro photographer? Or what if I’m just starting out? You can be a beginner or a pro. Again this is not so much a technical workshop as it is an artist’s workshop. That means, if you feel the BURN to create beautiful photos from your heart, you belong here.

Emma & Pete are the cutest cutsies ever, and I instantly fell in love with them. It was so great to hang out for a bit and meet this budding (exploding!) artist and her beautiful musician of a man.

Right near where we were staying in Bellsize Park, there was this gorgeous church, St. Peters, that I kept walking by and freaking out over, so we decided to shoot there.

We wanted to see if it was open so we went in and found that not only was it open but that there was some really beautiful choir music playing. The adorable priest inside was so welcoming when we asked if we could shoot in there. Once we looked up we realized that it was actually a real choir practicing! Elated.

I was totally blown away by this church which I think just celebrated it’s 150th birthday. Emma & Pete were a little surprised I think, probably because these types of old churches and buildings are a dime a dozen in Europe- I really wish we had more of this architecture stateside.

And this was kinda strange: as I was looking down at them I had a weird psychedelic momentary mind lapse because I realized that Emma and I look so much the same! I was like, woah Emma- we kinda look the same. I felt like I was taking a photo of myself for a second.

Well she wore a really pretty Betsey Johnson dress for the 2nd half of their e-session too… hm, do I smell a trend?? If so, it’s a good one.

oh, hey- by the way we are getting married right now- oh and also, you guys are the bridesmaids.

& this was the total “omg you’re in a wedding dress!! shut the F up!” moment it was seriously awesome to see everyone’s total surprise… I don’t know how Meegan kept this from her best friends… but she did! they had no clue. It was really cute.

And this is when the guests saw them and realized what was actually going on… this isn’t an engagement party- it’s a wedding! The cheers where so loud and emotional.

i heart rock ‘n roll bride so much… where would all of us wedding-obsessed bloggers be without her? she’s our rock, our foundation… and she’s just written another little pretty about me here.

Not only are they absolutely stunning to photograph, but Bill and Emilia have a couple of stellar personalities as well. Plus, they are a match made in heaven: the writer (Bill) and the dancer (Emilia) who met in college and both have an incredible sense of humor and excellent taste in music, clothing, film etc. Check out Emilia’s blogs: Veiled Vows & Auburn & Ivory.

… If it sounds as though I am sort of in love with them, it’s probably because I kind of am. I could shoot these guys forever and the more I get to know them, the more I get pleasantly surprised…  Btw, thanks for springing the life-size cardboard cutout of Edward Cullen on me the other night Emilia, I am silently awaiting my opportunity to surprise you as well… one day soon when you least expect it ; )

These were shot in San Diego at the Park Manor Suites, outside of Cafe de L’Opera, and Caffe Carpe Diem.

Emilia and I clicked immediately on what type of photo session we wanted to achieve. We had several connected concepts. Here is the result…

Here are the snaps from Zola & Derick’s engagement session. This sweet and stylish couple have such a cute house! I feel that shooting people in their home always exposes you to who they are… This is their stuff, their dog, their space, their bedroom, their taste and their little love story… in pictures. I can’t wait to shoot their wedding.

I had this idea with the giant “bling” below at the last moment and Steph stopped at a party store on her way down and actually found one! Score!

This porter potty was Stuart’s idea… genius. Steph is such a trooper.


When I asked her to pretend she was trying to flag down a cab, she said “I lived in New York, I’m an expert at this”. And I wondered how ridiculously gorgeous she must have looked doing this in Brooklyn.

We headed into Old Town to find some shooting locations and we hit a goldmine….

And then we found the most awesome location, a cigar shop named Racine & Laramie.

And this is Harry.

Aaron came up with this “Frida Kahlo” idea… brilliant! I still can’t get over it!

What’s bothering me about this whole thing, is that I think I actually look good with a mustache… that’s either not good, or very bad.

Yes, I did.
And I can’t actually figure out what’s more distracting: My giant shnoz? My hairy upper-lip? Oh, or maybe it’s the uni-brow?

That’s when he came up with yet another brilliant idea.

Then we dressed up and went out.

We had heard so much about The Better Half Bistro in Hillcrest, we had to try it.


The food was divine. This is Aaron with a quail bone, Stuart and I with the Lemon Sorbet palette cleanser. And Steph, Stu and Aaron looking at a photo on Stuart’s phone.

Stuart took tons of photos that night. I love these.

Then we went into the “man room” (that’s what Stuart calls it, it’s basically our music and video game room) and jammed out until 3am. Stephanie took all of these… She did a great job.

We decide to name our band EVIL, because we are so tough. And it’s such a tough name. This is our album cover:

And then everyone passed out. This is my entire heart, right here in this photo. Stuart always falls asleep with his glasses on.

The next morning we had some coffee and went out for breakfast to one of our favorite little places in South Park, Big Kitchen. The hippie breakfast joint… Tres Bien! Stuart took these.

That ’stach still got around the next day.
